by KARAN SHARMA (Under the Direction of Walter D. Potter) ABSTRACT In spite of the impressive successes of many Artificial Intelligence techniques in narrow domains, one of the unrealized goals of AI remains the creation of a generally intelligent machine. It is hypothesized that the capacity for being creative in a wide variety of environments is a necessary and sufficient condition for general intelligence in machines. In defense of our proposition, we bring forth three arguments: Law of Requisite Variety Argument, Turing Test Argument, and Complex Systems Argument. Grounded in our hypothesis, we introduce a new test of machine intelligence.

System Induction Games and Cognitive Modeling as an AGI Methodology
We propose a methodology for using human cognition as a template for artificial generally intelligent agents that learn from experience. In particular, we consider the problem of learning certain Mealy machines from observations of their behavior; this is a general but conceptually simple learning task that can be given to humans as well as machines. We illustrate by example the sorts of observ...
متن کاملMathematical Modeling for a Flexible Manufacturing Scheduling Problem in an Intelligent Transportation System
This paper presents a new mathematical model for a production system through a scheduling problem considering a material handling system as an intelligent transportation system by automated guided vehicles (AGVs). The traditional systems cannot respond to the changes and customer’s demands and for this reason, a flexible production system is used. Therefore, for this purpose, automated transpor...
متن کاملPersonalization and Recommender Systems in the Larger Context: New Directions and Research Questions (Keynote Speech)
My background is in building large-scale library automation systems and distributed networked information systems; these are areas where personalization has been very slow to arrive, and where recommender systems have met both cultural opposition (in part based in privacy concerns) and technical barriers. I have been a strong advocate of personalization in information retrieval systems; this se...
متن کاملEmotional Computation in Artificial Intelligence Education
After decades of work towards creating artificial intelligence, some researchers are now attempting to create machines that are emotionally intelligent. The standard definition of artificial intelligence is the ability for a machine to “think or act humanly or rationally” (Russell, 1995). The push towards emotionally intelligent machines is an exciting addition to this field, in the direction o...
